Letter from the board

It is both an honor and a privilege to serve on the Board of Directors of the Rose Lowenstein Foundation for Childhood Cancer Awareness. Each member works tirelessly to fulfill our mission of raising awareness of childhood cancer and making a direct impact on families in their time of need.

When a parent hears the words “your child has cancer”, the only thought you have is “what do I need to do in order to give my child the best chance to survive.” Lives are immediately put on hold, and this new, unimaginable reality supersedes everything. In addition to the primary concern for the health of their child, many families experience extreme financial hardship resulting from expenses for treatment and travel, coupled with the loss or reduction of household income due to traveling with and caring for their children.

There are many wonderful organizations that focus on childhood cancer research, which provides hope for tomorrow. At the same time, there are families right here and now in our own communities struggling with the day to day impact that childhood cancer leaves in its wake. Many families are required to seek specialty care from other hospitals outside of their own state or even outside of the country. It is not uncommon for families to be displaced from one another, miles apart, and for weeks to months at a time. During this time, it is not only the medical and travel expenses that are incurred, but also over-night accommodations, parking, food, and the everyday personal bills that sometimes have to be put on the backburner just to afford the ever present, day in and day out, burden that childhood cancer forces on a family.

Any given situation in the world of childhood cancer is unpredictable, and even after survivor status, many families continue to struggle with the onslaught of bills and back pay of medical bills and even personal bills. Many families continue to pay off debts years after their child has finished treatment, and many families continue to struggle to pay bills even if their child has passed. Childhood cancer creates an instability for years, including the ability to save for their children’s college or their own retirement.

This is where we step in. Our team works continuously to host events to raise awareness of childhood cancer and directly impact families in their time of need. Our Co-Founders, Billy and Brittany Lowenstein, have personally experienced the devastation that childhood cancer wrought on their family, but they saw their amazing community come together to aid them in their time of need. It is now their mission in life to pay forward the support they received from the Cameron, MO community and do everything they can to help other families directly as they were helped. Together, we as a Board of Directors strive every day to make their dream into a reality.

While one person can raise awareness of childhood cancer, it truly takes a community to make a difference. We sincerely hope you will join us in being a part of that difference.

Hugs, Hope and Lots of Love,

The Rose Lowenstein Foundation for Childhood Cancer Awareness Board of Directors
